LGBT Clients

Background and Inspiration

Since 1986, LGBT clients have chosen Stuart Armstrong as their lead financial adviser because he is able to guide them with sensitivity, inspiration, and integrity. When Stuart began building his practice, the AIDS epidemic was ramping up in Boston and many in the gay community were fearful for both their physical and financial lives. For Stuart it was trial by fire as he became road-tested very quickly in his career in ways many colleagues might only experience on rare occasions. Having lost many close friends and clients to AIDS, he never wanted those experiences to be taken for granted and has made it a lifelong commitment to pass on his professional skills to others in need through volunteer and professional work.

Role in the Community

Stuart has dedicated much of his professional and volunteer career to the LGBT community. From 1987 to 1991 Stuart presented over 30 financial workshops to AIDS Action Committee volunteers. He served on the Board of Directors of  Positive Directions, an organization offering peer-led services to the HIV/AIDS community, from 1996 to 1999. He served as Board President for two years and assisted Positive Directions through its strategic planning process.

Since 2004, Stuart has served on the national board of PridePlanners, an organization that provides educational guidance, marketing assistance and networking opportunities to planners who guide LGBT clients. He has been the Treasurer since 2007.

In January 2013, Stuart began service on the national board of directors of the Financial Planning Association (FPA), the largest member association of financial planners in the United States. Stuart was selected in part because of his passion for advancing inclusiveness in the financial planning profession and calling attention to the needs of clients from diverse communities. Stuart has also been a member of  the Diversity Committee, a national task force of the FPA since 2010 and he served as its Chair in 2012.
